Welcome to a new series on the blog called Story Time. In this post, I want to share with you guys my experiences with my first job and what I have learned. This will be very interesting and I hope some of you guys will find it interesting and useful.
I had just graduated from my nursing degree and was looking for a job. I went through so many job searches and I finally landed my first real job It was at call centre for an online website. I was basically receiving both phone calls and email about order enquiries and complaints. I had just graduated from nursing school and I was a fully qualified registered nurse but I could not find anything in my field. After endless searches online for decent jobs, I finally got a customer service job.
I was so nervous when I first started because the whole experience was new to me and this field was completely different from what I had studied for. My boss was really friendly and was more than happy to answer questions. I then met the staff and I thought they would be bitchy just because majority of them had the look but then after speaking to them after a few times I learned that they were actually really friendly.
My first week was probably the most challenging as I did not really have formal training session. I was basically thrown in the deep end of it all and just had to learn along the way. I did have a little notebook in which I had written down things that I needed to do and what to do in certain situations. I often found myself asking my co-workers what to do and how to do things.
After being there for a month, I realised a few things about the job. First of all, it is great to finally get paid for doing things! Second, wow this is not the job I had been dreaming for! It came crashing down on me like a brick wall that I had studied for all those years and here I am in a call centre, answering phones and email. I have to admit I felt very depressed but I spoke to my mum and she said it takes time and God has a plan for us all. However I kept positive and continued doing my job and found ways to cope with it such as taking a nice long walk after work to relax my mind and keep myself positive.
I have since moved on from this job but I now see the valuable lessons that I have learned from this job. The first one was to be very perceptive and analyse the work environment. Make sure you know where the essentials are like the toilet, the tea room and where the friendly staff members are.
I say the toilet because obviously we all have to go there at some point of the day but also because it is a great place to take a breather. Ok maybe not that kind of breather but if you work in a corporate type workplace you just need to break away from it all sometimes and a quick toilet break helps.
The tea room or the staff is essential because it provides another place for escape and of course to have some food. It also provides a great place to socialise with people and find the people you might be able to seek advise from when you are having a rough day.
Last but certainly not the least is knowing where you can find the friendly staff members. In most job places I have worked at, there has got to be at least one staff member you can click with in some way. This person is going to be the person you might rely on a lot for support. Just make sure you do not over do it and scare them away! Remember we are there to work but a little socialising is not too bad.
I hope you guys enjoyed this story!
