Last week I made a huge decision and got my very first laser facial hair removal treatment. I thought I would start a mini-series on the blog sharing my experience with each treatment.
Every since my facial hair started to grow, I have felt nothing but annoyance, irritation and pain when it comes to my facial hair. As I grew older, the hairs started to get darker and thicker which made makeup application more work as I always have to have a clean shaven face and colour correct my 5 o'clock shadow. For years I have been looking at at-home facial hair removal systems and clinics that provided the treatments but I was never too serious about it until recently.
What is it?
I had a consultation about facial laser hair removal and I was given all the information that I would need. I was told that I would experience pain during and after the treatment. I will talk more about the treatment itself in another blog post but the laser used in the treatment heats up dark pigments and that is how the hairs are killed to achieve hair loss. Unfortunately it also affects the natural pigments in the skin to a certain degree as well. I was also told that I may not see instant results and that I may need 6 to 8 treatments to achieve permanent hair loss.
My Experience
On the day of the treatment, I made sure that I had a clean shaven faced so against the direction my hair grew. When I arrived at the clinic I was told again what I would expect and provided with information to take home. I wore special goggles to block out the laser and was also told to keep my eyes shut in case there was a chance that the goggles did not completely cover my eyes.
The treatment began and I was expecting a lot of pain as I read on the internet it could be quite painful. The therapist started on the outer portions of my face first and it felt like a rubber band slapping my skin but it was tolerable. Then she moved to the centre parts of my face where the facial hairs where thicker and closer to each other, this was when I started to feel more pain. It was still tolerable but I asked her to take frequent breaks. All in all getting my beard area on my face and on my neck only took 20 minutes.
Immediately after the treatment, my top lip felt like it was sun burnt. It was too bad but it definitely was uncomfortable, the therapist then gave me some ice to help cool my skin down. I then looked at a mirror. I was expecting it to be completely red but to my surprise my skin was only slightly red around the area where I had thicker hairs but otherwise it was not really noticeable. I then provided to apply my makeup as normal as I had to head to work straight after.
That night I had a good look at my skin and my skin looked like normal. The 5 o'clock shadow you see in the photo above was a lot more less prominent and it was already apparent that some areas were going to grow patchy. The areas where the laser had touched felt a little sore but it did not bother me.
The next day my facial hair had started to grow back but the hairs looked and felt weaker. There were areas on my face where the facial hair had stopped growing but the centre part of my face still had the thicker hairs growing. Though not like what they use to but still there. I was not disappointed as I could already see results, I am excited to return in 6 weeks for more laser hair removal.
Once I have had my second treatment, there will be a link on this page to the next post.
